Old Enough to Die, Not Old Enough to Drink
In Canada, you can’t legally buy a beer at 18. You can’t buy cannabis. You can’t rent a car. At 18, most are still in high school, living at home, figuring life out.But at 18, you can apply for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).
A teenager is too immature to drink responsibly… but mature enough to choose death? That contradiction should make us all uncomfortable.
The conversation is moving further. Government committees have discussed expanding MAiD to “mature minors” — children and teens a doctor deems capable. Parents may not even need to be consulted or consent.Teens face depression, anxiety, bullying, heartbreak — the hardest years. Most of us look back and see we changed completely. Life gets better.
Society should protect young people in their pain, not offer death as an option. This isn’t just medical. It’s moral. What kind of country are we becoming? In Canada, you can be too young to buy a beer… but old enough to apply to die.
